Brittle Old PVC Pipes
Older PVC pipes become brittle with age and UV exposure. When they start cracking and shattering, it is time for professional repair or replacement.
Signs of Brittle PVC
- Pipes that crack or shatter when touched
- Discolored or faded pipe visible above ground
- Frequent breaks in the same areas
- Pipe pieces that crumble rather than cut cleanly
- System is 15+ years old with original piping
Why PVC Becomes Brittle
- UV degradation from sun exposure
- Chemical breakdown over time
- Ground movement stress
- Old original class 200 piping
Poor quality original class 200 pipe
The Class 200 Problem
Many older irrigation systems were installed with thin-walled Class 200 PVC pipe. While cheaper at installation, this pipe degrades faster and becomes brittle much sooner than higher quality Schedule 40 pipe.
When we find Class 200 pipe, we often recommend replacing entire sections with more durable materials to prevent recurring breaks and water waste.
Our Repair Approach
We carefully expose damaged sections, cut back to solid pipe, and install new fittings using gentle compression coupling fittings. For severely degraded systems, we may recommend section replacement or system upgrade.
Compression couplings provide a reliable, flexible connection that can handle ground movement without cracking, and allow immediate use without waiting for glue to cure.
